The BioChain isn't limited to one scientific discipline or one type of data. It's designed for situations where evidence passes between systems or organisations, and the history connecting those records matters.
A foodborne Salmonella investigation can involve organisations and systems that were never designed to maintain one shared audit trail. A suspected source can generate evidence across agriculture, food production, logistics, diagnostics, genomics, epidemiology and public-health response — farm, flock or crop record, processor, batch, distribution, retail product, diagnostic laboratory, isolate, sequencing, genomic analysis, epidemiological investigation, and finally a recall or control action.
Each participant can continue operating its own systems. The product record can remain in the manufacturer's traceability system. Laboratory results can remain in the LIMS. Sequence data can remain in the appropriate repository. Epidemiological information can remain within systems authorised to hold it. The BioChain records the provenance relationships connecting those pieces of evidence.
The BioChain does not replace the evidence systems. It connects their provenance.
Brazil's EU beef authorisation was withdrawn in September 2026 over antimicrobial guarantees, and the EU Deforestation Regulation adds a second evidence-intensive market-access regime three months later. Both point to the same underlying problem: connecting lifecycle evidence — animal identity, holdings, treatment records, slaughter, processing and export — across farms, veterinary systems, slaughterhouses, processors and certifiers who were never required to prove their history to one another.
A shared provenance layer wouldn't replace SISBOV, veterinary systems or export certification. It would let the same animal identity support antimicrobial, EUDR, traceability and other assurance evidence — without centralising the underlying data.
