The BioChain has launched The Ancient BioChain, our first public demonstrator for verifiable scientific provenance.
The Ancient BioChain was built to explore a simple but increasingly important question: can the history of scientific evidence remain visible, connected and verifiable as data move through complex analytical workflows?
We chose ancient DNA as the substrate deliberately. It is public, versioned, identifier-bearing and computationally transformed through long analytical pipelines — structurally the same provenance problem we describe across genomics, real-world evidence and outbreak investigation, without the governance complications of clinical or regulated data. That means it can be shown to anyone, tested by anyone, and used to learn what actually breaks when evidence has to travel between systems.
The demonstrator is not a claim that one architecture should become a standard. It is a working test of whether source, transformation, analysis and verification can be represented as a navigable, verifiable chain — the same discipline set out in our policy work on evidence governance and the minimum evidence record, applied end to end on real scientific material.

If your organisation generates, manages, analyses or governs biological evidence and would be interested in participating in a UK or European provenance demonstrator, The BioChain would welcome the conversation.
